How to find a hat for the Kentucky Derby

Writer: Joe BoozellJoe Boozell

What differentiates the Kentucky Derby from other top American sporting events?

Besides being "The Greatest Two Minutes In Sports," it's the fashion, of course. Specifically, the wide-ranging collection of hats you'll see at the Derby in a given year is a sight to behold.

For women, hats and dresses are the most crucial items to nail down before a weekend at the Derby.

Here, we're focusing on hats. Take these steps in figuring out your best look ahead of the Derby weekend.

Determine your price range

Once you determine your price range, you'll have better idea of which route you should take in buying a hat for the Derby.

As you might imagine, prices can vary significantly. On the lower end, you can find a hat for the Derby for below $50. On the higher end, some people spend hundreds of dollars.

Once you figure out how much you're willing to spend, you'll have a better idea of where you should look.

Where to look for Derby hats

Etsy and Amazon are good places to start, especially for newcomers.

Etsy has plenty of price points and styles, and generally sells products from small businesses. Search for Kentucky Derby hats on Etsy, and you'll have no shortage of options.

Amazon is also a good option, especially for someone who needs a hat in a pinch thanks to Prime. With Amazon, you can even buy individual parts to construct your own look!

If you'd rather go straight to the seller, here are some of the most established brands for Derby hats:

Determine what's most important to you

A hat is a major part of your Derby get-up, though it's not the only item to consider.

You'll want to keep in mind what dress you're planning to wear, both from a price and complementary standpoint.

Is the hat most important to you? Great, build your outfit around that, and perhaps spend a little more. If the dress is more important to you, vice versa.

Don't be afraid to go big!

Think of it as getting into a costume, if that helps. The Derby is a place to take a calculated fashion risk and expand your comfort zone!
